Two years ago, I made a decision to work in a fashion e-commerce business since it is becoming new a trend world wide. So I accepted an offer with the premium online fashion shopping dot com in UAE. It was discussed during my interview that I am aiming to get a Senior position in the Design team since I left the same position in my previous company so they promised that there is a promising opportunity for me.
It did not go that well after I realized the work routines for a crowd of graphic designers in the company. I was the only non-arabic speaking designer in the group of 10 and they use Arabic as their main language. I’m the only designer who has more than 5 years of experience in graphic design. They use PC. Most source of images are from Shutterstock. They use Photoshop as the basic design software… and they made me crop images from the white background (just one big time lol!). I felt like a newbie so much because I cannot make the cropping job of like 50 images fast enough for them (I bet they can do it really fast for their background). Background eraser tool or magic wand tool in Photoshop doesn’t do the job clean enough for me. I usually use Pen tool or Lasso tool for detailed cropping job to satisfy my work. It’s quality over quantity for me. I guess they laugh at me so hard because they cannot understand why I am still doing it my own way despite the pressure. Until they saw the wonders of my work.
I needed to be synchronized with the workflow. Because of that, I had to get used to layout using Photoshop since images are used for web applications. That was not very ideal for me as I only use Adobe Photoshop for digital manipulation and photo enhancement. Adobe InDesign and Illustrator are the standard design platforms that I am very used to. Made me more realized that I’ve gone backwards from my career path.
I love the whole online fashion shopping dot com idea. Fashion is one of my strength and will always want to work with. But the company is not in favor of me. So I quit after 3 months. Lesson learnt, e-commerce are only for newly graduates and freelancers. Can’t compete with their ability to crop images (lol!).
In all fairness, landing in that job was no mistake. It was a very good experience knowing what kind of career path a graphic designer can have in e-commerce. Everything happens for a reason and you don’t get screwed up for no reason. It was a test and a very good break from my serious career path.
Before I close this entry. Need you to know that there was good times during those month. They entrusted me to work with few of their branding materials. I was appointed to collaborate on redesigning the website and create the in house Magazine concept. They also appointed me to create branding with the new products.
Leaving them with the legacy of using classy typography such as Bauer Bodoni for their digital designs.
Here are few of my work.
Here are my Magazine Concept Design for Namshi.
